Fall 2004 – Bridge Components; Tower Crane Erection, Pier 37
A glimpse of the future: Concrete deck sections are fabricated at FS Prestress near Shreveport, LA.
Concrete deck sections are fabricated at FS Prestress near Shreveport, LA. During bridge construction, steel rebar will be threaded through the green steel loops on the panel ends to “stitch” the panels together. The panels will be attached to steel floorbeams and edge girders with post-tensioning rods. More concrete will be poured over the panels to create a base for the roadway surface.

A glimpse of the future: Unpainted edge girder sections in the fabrication yard at PDM Bridge near Jacksonville, FL. The angled sections are the housing framework for stay-cable anchorages.
From the catenary angle of the stay-cable anchorage framework, we can tell this girder section will be located further away from the bridge towers and closer to one end of the bridge.

Finished steel floorbeams begin to arrive at the bridge site from Florida. Girders and floorbeams are sent by barge. It is a two-week trip from Palatka, Florida to Greenville.

Erection of the Tower Crane at Pier 37 begins with attachment of the lower support platform (circled).

More of the Tower Crane support structure in place. The black steel support structures for the crane are temporary and will be removed when the crane is no longer needed.
As the bridge tower grows taller, the Tower Crane grows with it. This jacking mechanism raises the crane support framework about 20 feet (6m) and new support sections are inserted underneath.
The Tower Crane chassis, which includes the operator cab, is hoisted atop the crane support.

A month after the tower crane is installed, both the crane and the tower legs of Pier 37 have grown in height.
